Tanda of the Week 21 / 2011 -
Dj Stefan Ok (milonga)

1. Francisco Lomuto / Jorge Omar - "Qué Tiempo aquel" 1938
2. Pedro Laurenz / Juan Carlos Casas - "Milonga Compadre" 1938
3. Edgardo Donato / Horacio Lagos - "La milonga que faltaba" 1938

Here's another tanda from a guest dj, Stefan Ok from Germany and here's what he had to say about this tanda:

"I always wanted to play the milonga "Qué Tiempo aquel", which is for me one of the best milongas ever, because it has a unique light swing which is quite different from the deep (candombe) beat of some milongas. Mixing it with Lomuto Milongas is possible "No hay terra..." or "Azabache" but won't keep the charming spirit of this milonga, so i prefer to play it with registrations from other orchestras from the same year. If you listen to this tanda you'll know what i mean. "Milonga Compadre" is not that wellknown, but it fits almost perfect. The last Milonga of Donato is a real burner and can be changed with other Donato Milongas too."

Tanda of the Week 20 / 2011 -
Ángel D'Agostino

Listen to the tanda - MP3

1. Ángel D'Agostino / Julián Centeya - "Café Domínguez" 1955
2. Ángel D'Agostino / Ángel Vargas - "Ahora no me conocés" 1941
3. Ángel D'Agostino / Ángel Vargas - "Sólo compasión" 1941
4. Ángel D'Agostino / Ángel Vargas - "Caricias" 1945

Ángel Vargas
"Café Dominguez" is one of the great classics of tango but creating a tanda with this song can be a difficult task. The song is an instrumental apart for the intro speech by Julián Centeya and D'Agostino has very few instrumentals or even songs from the same time period that would have the same quality as "Café Dominguez".

I tried finding songs that would have more of a similar mood and energy as "Café Dominguez" although they weren't instrumentals or from the same time period. I found about 4-5 songs that I considered intense and dramatic enough and chose the following songs: I put "Ahora no me conocés" as the second song because of it's strong beginning which will keep up the energy set by "Café Dominguez" although going from 1955 to 1941 is quite a leap into a different era of tango and lesser recording quality. Then I have "Sólo compasión" continuing the classic melodies and drama and "Caricias" finishing the tanda. I was juggling these songs back and forth to find the right order and I think for me this is the best one. "Caricias" follows the opening track nicely also but I felt it had a stronger ending than "Ahora no me conocés" so for that reason also I wanted to have it as the last song.

Tanda of the Week 19 / 2011 -
Julio De Caro

MP3

1. Julio De Caro - "Amarguras" 1928
2. Julio De Caro - "Mal de amores" 1928
3. Julio De Caro - "Farolito de mi barrio" 1926
4. Julio De Caro - "Recuerdo" 1926

A melancholic instrumental tanda from Julio De Caro from the 1920's including the first recorded version of "Recuerdo" and the amazing "Amarguras", composed by Pedro Maffia, which was later renamed to "Abandono" when Homero Manzi added lyrics to it.

"De Caro maintained the essence of the tango originated in the slums, brave and playful as in the beginnings, but blending it with a sentimental and melancholic expressivity unknown up to then..." - todotango.com
